This week, the final week of the 2022-2023 NIFT season, NIFT held our second Beat Bobby Fly tying contest. Participants competed for the traveling champion’s vest, as well as bragging rights. The real goal of course is to have fun.
Contest rules are below, but the mystery materials (other than hooks) were revealed only on the night of the contest. Paul and Mark were the judges.
Beat Bobby Fly
Contestants should bring their usual NIFT meeting fly tying equipment.
They may also bring and use other materials from their own supplies.
The club will not, for example, provide such things as beads or cones, lead, or floss.
Contestants may tie up to two flies for judging, but only one will be required for entry–
we will supply a streamer hook and wet/dry hook.
Finished flies do not need to be/look like streamers or nymph, per se; those are just the hooks used.
If there is a tie at the end and one of the tyers has tied two flies,
the quality of both of their flies will be used to break the tie.
Contestants will have 60 minutes to complete their fly/flies.
Contestants must use at least 3 of the materials provided by the club on any fly they tie.
The required materials must be visible to the judges and an important part of the final fly.
Contestants should write out a list of the materials used for each fly.
On this list, they may also name the flies (e.g., the Peculiar Pink Panfish Predator).
Flies will be judged on appearance, viability as a functional fly, and quality of tying.
The Bobby Fly Grand Champion will receive the embroidered champion’s vest,
and will have their name added to the vest.
Because there are no prizes of monetary value this year (except the vest, which is priceless),
judges may be present in the room while people are tying, but they will judge the flies in a separate room.
They will have up to half an hour to reach a decision.
Mystery Materials will be shared with contestants the night of the contest
Hooks: streamer hooks, wet/dry fly hook
Winner!
